Starting my own business was a mix of excitement and anxiety. The thought of piecing it all together was daunting. However, what hit me the hardest was gaining the confidence I needed to succeed. I dedicated hours to learning effective marketing strategies, and though time-consuming, this investment proved to be invaluable. The small tasks associated with launching my business often felt overwhelming, emphasizing that success is built on experience, not just theories.
Building a Portfolio and Reputation from Scratch
One of the biggest challenges I encountered was creating a portfolio and establishing my reputation. With no work samples to display, I took a proactive route by joining networking events and posting on community groups within Facebook, offering my services at a free or reduced rate in exchange for Google reviews and case studies.
This approach not only gave me practical experience, but it also provided insightful feedback, crucial for my growth. By offering services for free in the beginning, potential customers felt less risk and more willing to help someone starting out. Let's be real, everyone wants someone new to win but no one wants to give money to the new person out of fear of it being lost.
Navigating Consultations and Sales Meetings
Creating a portfolio opened the door to another hurdle: learning to conduct consultations and sales meetings with potential clients. Initially, I felt lost and unsure of how to introduce myself, what questions to ask, or how to close deals effectively.
To conquer this fear, I immersed myself in various resources. I read books, listened to podcasts, and enrolled in online courses focused on sales techniques. Moreover, I practiced mock meetings with friends to boost my confidence. While awkward at first, this preparation proved to be beneficial. I mastered active listening and learned the questions that resonated with clients. As a result, closing deals became less intimidating, transforming it into an enjoyable process.
Vendor Negotiations
An added layer of my entrepreneurial journey involved negotiating with vendors and making tough decisions about what is needed and what is just a luxury. In sourcing materials and services, I had to identify which items and services are crucial to my success and what is just a "nice to have". Everyone will try to sell you their product and/or service, I'm sure many mean well and have a lot to offer, but it doesn't mean it's beneficial to your business when things are starting out and every dollar counts.
Don't ever feel that you need to say yes to everyone, learn to say no in a polite and respectful manner. Also, if you genuinely want a product or service but can't afford it, say it isn't within the budget and that you will circle back around. If the vendor can offer a discount and they want your business, they will counter-offer and that may work for you. If not, stick to your original statement.
Onboarding My First Client
Onboarding my first client was a significant milestone, but it came with a host of new challenges. Once the contract was signed, I faced the task of setting up a payment system. Anxiety crept in as I worried about potential pitfalls—what if they didn’t pay? What if they backed out after I had invested time?
To alleviate these worries, I researched secure payment options such as PayPal and Stripe, which are widely trusted. I also created a streamlined invoicing system and ensured the contract included terms that protected both parties. Transparency became crucial. By being clear about expectations, I established trust that made the process smoother.
The Power of Positive Affirmation
Throughout this rollercoaster journey, I found strength in positive affirmations when my confidence wavered. It may sound cliché, but repeating affirmations about my abilities helped silence my inner critic during uncertain times.
Mantras like "Every experience is a lesson" and "I am capable of mastering new skills" became my anchors. They served as reminders that each challenge I faced contributed to my growth as an entrepreneur, encouraging me to embrace self-improvement.
